When working from home, you may not have the small talk and other in-person activities that made each day at the office unique, but there’s no reason you can’t create connections! DMS has a completely remote workforce, and we’re always trying out new ways for our teams to stay connected. Below are some of our favorite ways to create connections while working from home.

1. Prioritize Asynchronous Communication. Using tools like Slack to create open spaces for communication that doesn’t need to happen in real-time is very effective in creating connections across teams, time zones and interests. DMS has more than 20 interest-based Slack channels where you can connect on anything from podcasts to sports, true crime to plant (and people) parenting.
2. Create Space For Open Conversation On A Variety Of Topics. For those who want to chat live, DMS hosts monthly zoom chats that are open spaces for people to drop in as they have time to talk about specific topics. You can share your current reading list with our avid readers, meet your coworkers’ work-from-home companions on our yappy hour or hop in and say hi during any of our open employee lounges.
3. Make Time To Catch Up. It’s important to remember the importance of making small talk at the beginning of meetings or making personal connections with your coworkers via Slack. When you have brief conversations about topics outside of the work that you're doing, you build authentic connection and trust with other people in a way that makes more goal-directed conversations and requests flow smoothly.
