The truth is, business administration is the most popular program for all but three states in America. But that doesn’t make a very interesting map, so we dove a bit deeper.
Instead, we compared state-by-state college program popularity against the national average. This is what we found:
Healthcare Professions and Related Programs
Known by most as a growing field, healthcare is strong across the country. As the map shows, there are a few bands of states that have a healthcare program as the strongest, one being Minnesota over to New York. Why? This stretch across the Midwest is likely due to the strength of hospitals in the area. Seven of the 17 U.S. News Best Hospitals for 2014-2015 fall within this band.
According to EngineerJobs.com, California is a hot bed of activity in this field – from Silicon Valley down to Anaheim and San Diego. A post on Monster.com explains that engineering jobs can often be found in close proximity to defense contractors, high tech and aerospace industries – including California, the Pacific Northwest and Arizona. Meanwhile, positions within the energy sector are common in Colorado, California and Arizona.
Mechanic and Repair Technologies/Technician Programs
Five states rank this program category at the top, and they are all right next to each other. But the type of mechanic program that ranks high changes from Autobody/Collision and Repair Technology/Technician in Indiana to Diesel Mechanics Technology/Technician in Kentucky. Electrical/Electronics Equipment Installation and Repair is the top program for both West Virginia and Maryland. And Virginia is focused on Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology/Technician.
Construction Management Programs
Part of the Business, Management, Marketing and Related Support Services category of program, the top states for Construction Management are DC, GA, HI and IL. Not surprisingly three of the top 10 U.S. cities with the most new construction fall within these states: Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, DC. Meanwhile, Hawaii is in the midst of a construction boom, explained by Honolulu Magazine as a result of low interest rates and high demand for housing.
Why should you care? As we often point out, program demand is very closely aligned with employment demand.
