More Help Is Needed For Food Pantries To Sustain Demand Of NYC Residents
Clearwater, FL – May 27, 2020 — As New York City feels the strain of historic unemployment levels amidst the current pandemic, food pantries across the city are struggling to keep up with the spike in demand. As a result, Digital Media Solutions (DMS), alongside the office of New York State Senator Brian A. Benjamin and the First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC) food pantry, is stepping up and donating enough food to feed up to 400 families for a week. The efforts and donations made by DMS will provide relief to help feed some of the most vulnerable members in one the hardest hit communities in the country. DMS knows its contributions are just the beginning. While the generous donation made by DMS will provide relief, these efforts are not enough. DMS is encouraging other companies and community members to also lend a hand to support families and communities desperately in need.
Taking place Friday, May 29th from 11:30am - 2:00pm, volunteers will distribute pre-assembled bags of groceries, each providing one week’s worth of food for a family of four. Those in need can come to the food pantry of FCBC, located at 1912 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, New York, NY 10026. FCBC is one of the few local food pantries that has been able to remain open during the health crisis. Staff workers from the FCBC food pantry have reported an increase in community members relying on the food pantry’s services, and they anticipate a continued need for donations and volunteers. Although the food pantry is operated by FCBC, its services are not specific to parishioners and are open to anyone in the community that needs assistance.
“We are here to answer the call to action. Now is the time we all must come together, show solidarity and help the members of the most impacted and vulnerable region across the U.S. who are struggling to put food on the table,” said Luis Ruelas, Co-Founder & Executive Vice President of Business Development for DMS. “At DMS, we view challenging times as an opportunity to not just survive, but thrive. With the help of fellow businesses and representatives, I believe our communities can come out of this time stronger than ever.”
Senator Benjamin, who has remained committed to his ongoing relief efforts by distributing hand sanitizer and face masks to those in need over the course of the pandemic, will be on site at FCBC. As the Senator for the 30th District of the New York Senate, Benjamin is the representative of an area that has been suffering from severe food insecurity issues. As a result, many members of this community rely heavily on the services of food pantries like FCBC.
“Even before COVID19 toppled our already fragile economic system, there were many in my Harlem community – including seniors, low wage workers, immigrants and children – experiencing food insecurity and hunger while struggling to avoid homelessness,” said Benjamin. “First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC) has been on the frontlines of the ‘end hunger’ fight through its ‘Breakfast Before Books’ program and weekly pantry operation. The pandemic and resulting economic recession has made FCBC’s pantry operation even more dire and essential. I am grateful for Digital Media Solutions’ generosity to help ensure no human being goes hungry, as FCBC and institutions like it experience increased demand for this essential service.”
“The road ahead is uncertain, but at DMS, we believe positive energy and actions are contagious, which is why we make it a point to lead from the front during challenging times such as these,” said Jessica Rogers, DMS Chief of Staff. “Our hope, through this joint effort with Senator Benjamin and FCBC, is that we can inspire others to donate. This is an important opportunity for us all to selflessly come together in cooperation and help the communities affected most.”
DMS remains dedicated to driving meaningful change, devoted to becoming the change it wants to see in the world and encouraging others to positively impact their local and global communities. With families and children as one of its core focuses of its meaningful change initiative, DMS has raised funds to benefit children’s organizations, contributed to food pantries, purchased holiday gifts for children in foster care and more. Just last year, DMS took part in its fifth year of the company’s signature annual community engagement program, DMS Season of Giving. Together, Team DMS donated clothing and gifts to children and families in ten communities.
Volunteer registrations and food and monetary donations for the NYC food pantry initiative are all currently being accepted. For more information, or to make a donation, please visit: https://www.shelbygiving.com/App/Giving/firs1912299.
