Be Accountable To Yourself First
The most important job any of us will ever have is to create and continue to be the best versions of ourselves. Every action we take gets us each closer to or further away from that ideal. And the more we recognize what we’re doing and act consciously, the more likely we are to follow our values and not let negative influences prevent us from being our best.
Tony Robbins, one of my life coaches, recommends people create their own mission statements, with “towards” values and rules distinguished from “away from” values and rules. The process of defining the values and rules helps individuals realize who they want to be and how to achieve their best.
For example, my mission statement is “to be committed to growth through courage in all that I do, to give and receive love unconditionally, ever grateful, full of health and vitality.”
- My towards values are: love, courage, gratitude, empathy and health/vitality
- My away values are: anger/rage/resentment, fear/doubt, contempt and unfounded rejection
The process of creating a mission statement alongside rules to achieve that mission was enlightening and powerful for me. I encourage everyone to take a stab at creating your own mission statement and rules. Once you identify your “towards” values, you can share them with your colleagues, friends, partners and more. I suspect you will have a lot of complementary “towards” values across the various groups in your life.
