Computer and Information Sciences Maintains Stronghold on #3 Spot on List of Top Program Categories

October 6, 2017 Melissa Piccinich

Computer and Information Sciences maintained a stronghold on the number three spot on the top programs list according, to the Sparkroom Q2 2017 Higher Education Inquiry Generation Review. This program initially jumped in the rankings in Q1 2017, bumping Education down to the number four spot for two consecutive quarters.

Even with significant drops QOQ in computer program volume and share of volume (SOV), the overall pattern for computer program SOV has been an upward trajectory. In fact, in Q1 2017, computer program SOV hit a two-year peak in at 7.4%.

Conversion rates (CVR) for the Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services category fluctuated from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017. In 2016, the CVR rose above 5%, then passed 6% in Q3 2016. In Q1 2017, CVR hit its lowest point since Q3 2015. When data was pulled for the Sparkroom Q2 2017 Higher Education Inquiry Generation Review, the CVR for Q2 2017 was 5.5%. With additional maturation anticipated, Q2 2017 may bring the CVR back above 6% once again.

Based on projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), demand for computer and information technology occupations is not expected to slow anytime soon. According to BLS data, a 12% increase in employment is expected from 2014 through 2024. In fact, this industry's progress is estimated to outpace similar scientific and technical professions and the economy as a whole. From 2014 to 2024, the national marketplace anticipates an addition of 480,000 new jobs in computer systems and information technologies. The driving force behind these projections may be the combination of a greater emphasis on cloud and mobile computing, software development and growth in big data and an expanding “internet of things.”

The top computer program in Q2 2017, based on SOV, was Web Page, Digital/Multimedia, and Information Resources Design. According to BLS data, web design professionals saw a median annual wage of $66,130, in May 2016, with the highest salaries exceeding $119,000. As consumers expand their demands of ecommerce, the retail industry is placing more emphasis on web development and design. With an expected job growth of 27% from 2014 to 2014, BLS data predicts the growth of web developers is higher than the average for computer and information technology occupations overall.
