Instagram recently announced its newest effort to help content creators and influencers expand their social media businesses with a new native affiliate marketing tool, slated to launch in the coming months.
What Is Instagram’s Upcoming Affiliate Marketing Tool?
Instagram’s planned affiliate marketing tool will allow content creators to “discover new products available on checkout, share them with their followers and earn commissions for the purchases they drive — all within the Instagram app.” Similar to sponsored posts, when an Instagram user sees an “affiliate post from a creator featuring a tagged product,” the user will also see “eligible for commission” alongside the post. This language is intended to clearly indicate to users that a purchase from the post financially supports the creator. Instagram notes that the new affiliate marketing tool will also provide participating brands with “a new way to partner with and reward creators who share their products.” To start, the new affiliate tool will be tested among a select number of U.S. creators and leading brands, including Sephora and MAC Cosmetics, with plans for further expansion.
“Creators have always used Instagram to share products they love, and people trust their favorite accounts for inspiration and new products,” Instagram noted in its blog post announcing the new affiliate features. Adding, “we want to give more creators access to our shopping tools and allow them to get rewarded for the purchases they drive.”
What Additional Features Coincide With Instagram’s New Affiliate Marketing Tool?
Instagram shared that, by the end of 2021, select U.S. influencers will be eligible to launch partnerships with any one of the social platform’s merchandise partners. Through those partnerships, creators will be able to “establish a shop” on Instagram where they can “drive product launch sales” with any of Instagram’s merchandise partners. Additionally, Instagram is now offering a new option for creators looking to promote and sell their personal product lines by featuring a link to their shops on their personal Instagram profiles.
Why Is Instagram Introducing An Affiliate Marketing Tool?
Influencers are continuing to seek out new ways to monetize the audiences they attract across social platforms and grow their personal businesses even further on social media. “Creators may be drawn to experiment with these affiliate and shop features, since for now, they won’t lose a cut of their profits to Instagram,” notes TechCrunch contributor Amanda Silberling.
Instagram has continued to expand its offerings for content creators in recent years in order to establish itself as a leading platform among the influencer community. With its upcoming affiliate marketing tool, Instagram is adding to its hub of social commerce features that lure influencers in and subsequently increase engagement among consumers on Instagram.

And if you have an idea that you want to share with the world, you should be able to create it and get it out there easily and simply — across Facebook and Instagram — and then earn money for your work,” said Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook and Instagram’s recent Creator Week event.
