In honor of national “Take Our Daughter and Sons to Work Day,” Digital Media Solutions Vice President of Culture, Jessica Rogers, shares information about the company’s commitment to maintaining a great place to work for Team DMS and the next generation of marketers.
Why does DMS celebrate Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day?
DMS understands the importance of family for employees, and that's why we host the annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, an event that introduces young people to the workplace. Two years ago, I launched our version, which is called DMS Junior, in honor of this day. My goal is for employees to have fun, allow their kids to explore our industry and make lasting memories with their families in our workplace.
What makes this program unique?
I think it’s important to note that there are so many companies that no longer offer this experience [bringing kids to work], but we know that family is important to Team DMS, so we are proud to continue celebrating this national initiative. For us, this program provides the opportunity for parents to expose kids to technology plus business and marketing skills that they can carry with them beyond that day. These kids not only see up close where and what their moms and dads do at work, but they also learn things that may help them succeed in the future.
What is the DMS Junior?
Each year on the fourth Thursday in April, DMS provides an exciting array of activities for children ages 5–11. Activities include office tours, interaction with our executive leadership across offices and interactive activities. For instance, in 2017 the kids in the Clearwater office participated in DMS Tasty Treats, during which they created a mock ice cream truck business and learned the principles of marketing to customers. The kids created their own sales pitches along with other marketing collateral, which was really just a chance for them to make fun arts and crafts with the customer in mind. The exercise allowed them to explore the basic principles of entrepreneurship, sales and marketing.
What’s different about DMS Junior program compared to other companies?
The biggest differentiator is that we want to use this program to empower employees to inspire their children to explore marketing and technology at an early age. Through DMS Junior, we are helping prepare kids for a brighter future. Obviously no one wants to bring their kid to an office to sit on their lap playing on their phone all day, so I created what I hope has been an engaging program that teaches young people about DMS in a way that they can understand. We want our kids to be proud of their parents. Yes, the kids do get to have a lot of fun, but I can tell you our executives and employees get just as much joy out of this experience as they do!
